Emily Rothschild is an Industrial Designer, she makes things. She holds a BA in art history from Vassar College, a certificate in Curatorial Studies from the Whitney Independent Study Program, and a Masters of Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her combined background of curatorial work and design promotes the telling of visual stories through objects and experiences. She has worked at the Guggenheim Museum and New Museum of Contemporary Art and currently works out of Smokestack Studios in Fall River, MA. A recipient of the Andrew Graham Bell departmental RISD thesis award, this ongoing project has been recognized on Core77 and was selected as part of the American Design Club’s exhibition Hue Are You in Brooklyn, NY. A native New Yorker, Emily currently calls Cambridge Massachusetts home.
Started as her Masters thesis, this body of work – some of which you see here - reflects individual needs and preferences relating to medication management in our lives and homes today. While medicine and our relationship with it have changed considerably in recent years, the tools and objects used in these interactions have remained static. Emily’s work focuses on re-thinking how these interactions play out and what tools and objects are most relevant given the medical needs and preferences of individuals. These new tools reflect personal needs and integrate medication into other daily routines that have to do with quality of life.
