When it comes to the origin and development of the two types of bows, compound bows do not have long development history as recurve bows.
Compound bows were developed in the mid-20th century. The event that marked the patent was in 1953 when by Holless Wilbur Allen attached pulleys to the altered ends of a traditional recurve bow.
As for recurve bows, the very first recurve bows were used by hunters to shoot antelope, elk, and bison. Until 1953, recurve bows were redeveloped by Bear Archery.
In terms of design, compound bows are supported with the system of pulleys or cams, which helps them build up force and produce a reduction in the resistance.
This is to say; the archers will control the force more easily.
Thus the extra force generated from the pulleys and cams leads to the further distance of the arrows than those from the recurve ones.
In contrast, recurve bows do not have extra force from pulleys or cams. They are designed with the ends curve back inward and only one string. It is the curved ends of the bow that generate the stronger force for the bows.
However, without the assistance of pulleys and cams system, recurve bows do not enable the arrows to fly so further as those from compound bows.
As for the materials, there are also differences between the two types. Generally, recurve bows are made from wood. Fiberglass and carbon are also used to make this type of bows.
Bows that are made from fiberglass and carbon are lighter and stronger than those made from wood.
Differently, carbon and aluminum are typical materials used to made compound bows.
As for the purpose of using, recurve bows are used in target archery competitions like Olympic whereas compound bows are not allowed due to the support of pulleys and cams.
However, compound bows are popular with hunters because this type allows the hunters to shoot greater distance without putting more force.
Besides, the release of tension contributes to preventing the hunters from being tired so quickly.
In this light, this type of bows ensures the accuracy in long-term period hunting. However, some experienced hunters still choose recurve bows instead.
Other aspects that should be put the focus on are technique and accuracy. As for recurve bows, they rely more on the archers’ technique, which makes the archers’ experience more challenging.
Compound bows, on the other hand, help reduce archers’ fatigue, which also improves the accuracy.

In general, about comparable quality, a compound bow is slightly expensive than a recurve one.
